Coney Island Mermaid Parade ’16

One of the best parades in NYC is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s a home-grown effort that anyone can participate in and it’s free of corporate floats. It’s also one of the best parades in New York City to photograph for both it’s colorful costumes and flamboyance.

I photographed the parade both at the staging area as well as on the parade route this year, getting some new perspectives of the parade participants. If you’ve never been to this parade you’re missing out on a great way to usher in the summer season. Here are a few images from the parade. Jazz Age Lawn Party 2016

Been a little while since I’ve added an entry to my blog. I’ve been busy helping lead some modeling photo workshops and working on growing a headshot business. So if anyone needs headshots, let me know. I’ll post some of my work in that area shortly.

Last week the 11th annual Jazz Age Lawn Party was held on Governor’s Island, a 5-minute ferry ride from lower Manhattan. This Prohibition-inspired gathering attracts now thousands of people, many in period dress from the ’20s, ’30s & ’40s.

Here are a few images from last week’s event. More can be seen on my website: http://www.rzfimages.com/2016-Photos/Jazz-Age-Lawn-Party-16/

SantaCon Gets an Undeserved Bad Wrap in the Media

I did my personal SantaCon photowalk yesterday (12/12/15) around the East Village in Manhattan getting some images of the revelers. While SantaCon kicked off in Brooklyn this year, vs. Times Square, I decided to be lazy and shoot the assorted Kris Kringles, Elves & Reindeers later in the day in my home borough.

Being out around 4pm the conventional wisdom would have said that SantaCon participants–reveling since 10am–would have been all liquored up by then. But from what I saw, it was far from the case. People were having a good time but were far from drunk, and I went around to several of the sanctioned bars on SantaCon’s route to take pics. The NYPD, it was reported, make no (zero, nada) arrests for drunk & disorderly conduct.

Yet, it seems several New York media outlets (The Daily News, NY Post and Gawker being fairly egregious) have a narrative they want to put forward of a bunch of rowdy drunks in red, instead of seeing this as a fun celebration — which is what I’ve found over the years with people attending SantaCon. Frankly, I’ve seen worse behavior from spectators at the NY Marathon than at SantaCon.

Okay, rant over. Here are a few images from my SantaCon photowalk. More images on my website.

NYC Marathon 2015

It was a picture-perfect day for the annual NYC Marathon. The weather was cool and the overcast sky kept the temps both comfortable and great for photographing this incredible race. Some 50,000 participants went the distance this year and what was striking to me, was something that while not unusual, and in fact quite typical, was the focused demeanor of the serious runners compared with those just wanting to participate, not worrying about their time, but just finishing and enjoying being in the moment.

Here are a few images from the Marathon. More can be found on my website.

A Life Story Foundation Benefit

Last week a call was put out by renowned NYC headshot photographer, Peter Hurley, to his Headshot Crew to photograph an event dear to his heart, the NYC Best Chef’s Ultimate Family Dinner Benefit and auction for the A Life’s Story Foundation. This foundation was formed by one of his close friends, Kevin Swan, who contracted ALS in 2012, and is dedicated to funding research to effectively treat and ultimately find a cure for ALS. The images below are from Monday’s benefit dinner.

Five celebrity chefs each prepared a course for this benefit, they being:

Marco Canora from Hearth (where the benefit took place)
Seamus Mullen from Tertulia
Howard Kalachnikoff from Gramercy Tavern
Jordan Frosolone from Sessanta
Claudia Fleming from North Fork Table and Inn

It was a great turnout for this event and some incredible food as well. It was a worthy event to photograph as well as one to support with donations.

Pin-Up Model Shoot at the Trolley Museum

Pin-up style shoots is a fun genre for photographers. I shoot with the NY Pinup Club from time to time, which puts together some fun venues and finds some great models for these shoots.

Here are some images from  a couple weeks ago. We photographed at the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT, with three models and some talented stylists and makeup artists whot gave our models some incredible looks.

Tech Notes: I used a combination of on-camera and off-camera flash, depending on the physical ability in the different areas in which we were shooting. On both speedlites I was shooting with, I used Rogue Flashbenders to get some nice even lighting, or to use as fill flash where needed.

Jazz Age Lawn Party 2015

Photographing at the Jazz Age Lawn Party is like shooting on a studio set for a period production. A vast majority of attendees to this ’20s event are dressed up in some great flapper and other period clothing at this festival on Governor’s Island, a 5 minute ferry ride from Manhattan. There were two stages where bands played swing and jazz and plenty of room for dancing.

Here are several images I made this past weekend, with more on my website.

If you weren’t able to come out this weekend, the Jazz Age Lawn Party is gearing up again on August 15 & 16.
