Coney Island Mermaid Parade ’16

One of the best parades in NYC is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s a home-grown effort that anyone can participate in and it’s free of corporate floats. It’s also one of the best parades in New York City to photograph for both it’s colorful costumes and flamboyance.

I photographed the parade both at the staging area as well as on the parade route this year, getting some new perspectives of the parade participants. If you’ve never been to this parade you’re missing out on a great way to usher in the summer season. Here are a few images from the parade. Coney Island Mermaid Parade Kicks Off The Summer of 2014 In Style!

Saturday was a perfect day for the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Great weather and the official first day of Summer, which this parade has celebrated for 32 years. This is a fun parade to shoot because it’s a home-made artsy parade without huge sponsor floats.

Here are some images from yesterday’s parade. More can be found on my website and on Flickr.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade 2012

You know that summer is here in NYC when Manhattan empties out on Friday evening with the rush of people to the Hamptons and the Jersey Shore–and The Coney Island Mermaid Parade swims down Surf Avenue in–where else?–Coney Island.

This year The Coney Island Mermaid Parade celebrated its 30th anniversary on June 23. Part art parade with a Mardi Gras feel, the Coney Island Mermaid parade has its roots in the Coney Island Mardi Gras, which was held for nearly 50 years in the early 1900’s.

This shot is probably one of my favorites that I captured at the Coney Island Mermaid Parade

If you come to watch the Coney Island Parade, you’ll find certain attributes you don’t see in most NYC parades: home-made costumes and floats abound. And this being an art parade featuring mermaids and mermen–there are plenty of parade participants who hew to authenticity–so there’s definitely some “skin in this game” though it tends to be tastefully done; lots of body paint and pasties abound. But you’ll find plenty of small kids marching with their parents as well as families with kids viewing from the sidewalks.

There’s truly nothing like watching the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s an experience unto itself that’s second only to the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade. Check out the slideshow below and see for yourself. And welcome to Summer in the City!

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Coney Island, NY is a place known for its boardwalk, Nathan’s hot dogs, amusement rides–and a lot of quirkiness. That’s what makes this area of Brooklyn so unique. There are still sideshows, burlesque shows that hail back to it’s roots as an entertainment center for the masses.

Every June Coney Island hosts it’s Mermaid Parade, one of the few home-grown parades you’ll find in The Big Apple. It’s like the Mardi Gras parade of NYC! Home-made costumes abound that are highly creative–and given that it’s a mermaid theme, you’ll be sure to see women dressed in all variations of mermaids in the way they’re meant to be (that means a lot of “skin” showing, though tastefully so). Therefore, be prepared to see a lot of pasties and body paint if you plan to bring your kids–and there are plenty of parents that do.

Here are some shots (G-rated) I took from this year’s parade. The Mermaid Parade is a blast! Running up Surf Avenue and then down the Boardwalk, the parade route is packed. Come out next year for the fun–just don’t get in front of my camera!
