Coney Island Mermaid Parade ’16

One of the best parades in NYC is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s a home-grown effort that anyone can participate in and it’s free of corporate floats. It’s also one of the best parades in New York City to photograph for both it’s colorful costumes and flamboyance.

I photographed the parade both at the staging area as well as on the parade route this year, getting some new perspectives of the parade participants. If you’ve never been to this parade you’re missing out on a great way to usher in the summer season. Here are a few images from the parade. Coney Island Mermaid Parade Kicks Off The Summer of 2014 In Style!

Saturday was a perfect day for the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Great weather and the official first day of Summer, which this parade has celebrated for 32 years. This is a fun parade to shoot because it’s a home-made artsy parade without huge sponsor floats.

Here are some images from yesterday’s parade. More can be found on my website and on Flickr.

Coney Island Photowalk

I’ve traveled to Coney Island several times, mostly to photograph the annual Mermaid Parade, held each June. The costumes (or body paint!) marchers display are hand-made, highly imaginative and very colorful.

The boardwalk area itself is a feast for the eyes. From the rides and the Wonder Wheel, the old Parachute Jump to the carnival games, the boardwalk restaurants (Nathan’s Famous–of course!) and the average characters, Coney Island is a great place to capture a unique side of New York City.

Photographer Rick Sammon hosted a photowalk on the Coney Island boardwalk yesterday and it definitely was worth the subway ride from Manhattan to join about 30 other photographers. There were also a couple of models to photograph as the sun was setting. Here are a few of the images I came back with:

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

Coney Island, NY is a place known for its boardwalk, Nathan’s hot dogs, amusement rides–and a lot of quirkiness. That’s what makes this area of Brooklyn so unique. There are still sideshows, burlesque shows that hail back to it’s roots as an entertainment center for the masses.

Every June Coney Island hosts it’s Mermaid Parade, one of the few home-grown parades you’ll find in The Big Apple. It’s like the Mardi Gras parade of NYC! Home-made costumes abound that are highly creative–and given that it’s a mermaid theme, you’ll be sure to see women dressed in all variations of mermaids in the way they’re meant to be (that means a lot of “skin” showing, though tastefully so). Therefore, be prepared to see a lot of pasties and body paint if you plan to bring your kids–and there are plenty of parents that do.

Here are some shots (G-rated) I took from this year’s parade. The Mermaid Parade is a blast! Running up Surf Avenue and then down the Boardwalk, the parade route is packed. Come out next year for the fun–just don’t get in front of my camera!
