One of the best parades in NYC is the Coney Island Mermaid Parade. It’s a home-grown effort that anyone can participate in and it’s free of corporate floats. It’s also one of the best parades in New York City to photograph for both it’s colorful costumes and flamboyance.
I photographed the parade both at the staging area as well as on the parade route this year, getting some new perspectives of the parade participants. If you’ve never been to this parade you’re missing out on a great way to usher in the summer season. Here are a few images from the parade. Yesterday (4/11/15) was a perfect day for the 17th annual Tartan Day Parade up Sixth Avenue. This parade, while only 10 blocks long, is a hidden gem of parades. Great pageantry, with gorgeous colors of different tartans uplifting and inspiring pipe & drum music and very friendly people — and dogs: there’s a contingent of both Scottish and West Highland White Terriers (“Westies”) that are also part of the parade tradition.
The best part of this parade, in my mind, is at the end, when the bands turn up W55th Street. That’s where most of my images were shot, with some bands still playing, and friendly parade members and their families posing for the images I shot. Here are a photos. Many more images are available for viewing and purcasing on my website: http://goo.gl/6k9uMP.

Saturday was a perfect day for the annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade. Great weather and the official first day of Summer, which this parade has celebrated for 32 years. This is a fun parade to shoot because it’s a home-made artsy parade without huge sponsor floats.
Here are some images from yesterday’s parade. More can be found on my website and on Flickr.

The Tartan Day Parade in NYC is always colorful and fun to watch. There’s a relatively low-key crowd and bagpipe music to listen to and enjoy on a beautiful day. Because of its relatively smaller size compared to other parades, it’s also easier find good spots for photographing the parade.
One tradition found at this parade are Scottish Terriers and West Highland White Terriers that walk the parade route with their owners–in tartan of course!
Here are some of the best shots:
