Tartan Day Parade ’15

Yesterday (4/11/15) was a perfect day for the 17th annual Tartan Day Parade up Sixth Avenue. This parade, while only 10 blocks long, is a hidden gem of parades. Great pageantry, with gorgeous colors of different tartans uplifting and inspiring pipe & drum music and very friendly people — and dogs: there’s a contingent of both Scottish and West Highland White Terriers (“Westies”) that are also part of the parade tradition.

The best part of this parade, in my mind, is at the end, when the bands turn up W55th Street. That’s where most of my images were shot, with some bands still playing, and friendly parade members and their families posing for the images I shot. Here are a photos. Many more images are available for viewing and purcasing on my website: http://goo.gl/6k9uMP.

Tartan Day Parade

The Tartan Day Parade in NYC is always colorful and fun to watch. There’s a relatively low-key crowd and bagpipe music to listen to and enjoy on a beautiful day. Because of its relatively smaller size compared to other parades, it’s also easier find good spots for photographing the parade.

One tradition found at this parade are Scottish Terriers and West Highland White Terriers that walk the parade route with their owners–in tartan of course!
Here are some of the best shots:

Tartan Day Parade

Parade season’s in full swing in NYC, which means that you can get some colorful, animated people shots. Saturday April 10 was the Tartan Day Parade, celebrating Scottish-American heritage. Lots of vibrant colored tartan kits, and Scottish Terriers and Westies dressed in tartan patterns.

Some of the best shots from a parade isn’t on the route but at the landing area at the end of the parade. Everyone’s in great spirits and you can mingle in with the marchers who are still celebrating and get some great close-ups.

Here are a few shots. More can be found on my Facebook page:
